Laura Ingraham Vs Linda Chavez

Written by: Uncle Seth The Noble on Friday, June 1st, 2007

Linda Chavez appeared on The Laura Ingraham show to defend her recent column titled “Fear and Loathing” that accused many on the Republican side of being racist over their opposition to the Kennedy/McCain immigration bill being pushed in the senate. Mrs. Chavez starts her column like this:

Some people just don’t like Mexicans — or anyone else from south of the border. They think Latinos are freeloaders and welfare cheats who are too lazy to learn English. They think Latinos have too many babies, and that Latino kids will dumb down our schools. They think Latinos are dirty, diseased, indolent and more prone to criminal behavior. They think Latinos are just too different from us ever to become real Americans.

Great job by Laura for confronting this kind of thuggish response by proponents to shame people into supporting the bill. Linda Chavez has lost serious credibility with such a bombastic approach – good to see Laura Ingraham take her on.

The mistake Linda Chavez made was saying making the generalized claim that “a fair number of Republican members of Congress,” or the buffoonish “Lou Dobbs” “just don’t like Mexicans.”

There is no objective evidence of this. Now, Ms. Chavez is certainly correct that there is a lot mocking cultural innuendo among those who for tightening border enforcement (I count myself among the latter group). Her arguments, with the exception of this needless hysterics (which is actually the reason I stopped listening to Laura Inrgham more then a year ago) are certainly more of an exception then a rule and not a reason to read her out of the conservative movement.

While I don’t agree with all of Chavez’s on immigration (which seem similar to Michael Barone’s), are well thought out and draw to past historic parallels.

Oh, for your poll, I oppose the Senate “Amnesty” because I think it’s likely to make this worse for the country. Michael Medved, who I normally like, used a poor question, asking his guest (to the best of my memory), “If you don’t pass this bill, how will things get any better?” This seems entirely specious to me. Things very well may get worse without the bill, bet the question is degrees.

I haven’t seen your blog before. It looks nice.
