Liberal Intolerance #111: Christians Chased From San Fransisco’s Castro District
About 2 minutes into this video a guy looks into the camera and tells Christians and Mormons to stay out of their neighborhoods and advises never to come back.
From Free Republic – an account from the scene:
It wasn’t long before the violence turned to perversion. They were touching and grabbing me, and trying to shove things in my butt, and even trying to take off my pants – basically trying to molest me. I used one hand to hold my pants up, while I used the other arm to hold one of the girls. The guys huddled around all the girls, and protected them.
Soon after, the cops came and stood between us and the mob. When it was getting more heated, the cops were like “You guys should leave.” because it was getting harder to protect us. and Roger said “We want to stay.” Then he said if you want to get out you have to get out now.
Someone tried to steal my backpack, but I tapped a cop on the shoulder, and said “Hey, that’s my bag.” and he got it from him and gave it to me. Others weren’t so lucky. Probably half our team got their jackets stolen.
Eventually, as the crowd was getting more and more uncontrollable, the cops were afraid for our lives, so they escorted us to our van. (The cops were very nice to us from start to finish.) Our van was parked pretty far because it was hard to find parking that day. As the cops escorted us, the mob followed us, until the cops formed a line, and held off the people so we could drive away. We took the long way home, just in case anyone tried to follow us.
MORE: From KTVU in San Francisco:
Members of the gay community said that almost every Friday night, a Christian group meets at the corner of Castro and 18th Streets. They try to convert gays and lesbians into a straight lifestyle.
This Friday night, the message didn’t go over well.
Some gays and lesbians reacted by trying to chase the group out of the Castro.”Their rights were respected,” said Joe Schmitz, an opponent of Prop 8. “They got a chance to go ahead and pray on the sidewalk and I had the opportunity to express my freedom of speech which is telling them to get out of my neighborhood.”
San Francisco Police officers in riot gear formed a line and escorted the religious group into a van to safely get them out of the area.
Members of the gay community insisted that their reaction to the Christian group was spontaneous. “It was not an organized thing. We’re tired of it. It’s not religious. It’s not a racial thing. It’s about hate. We’re trying to send a message across the world that we’re standing up and we don’t want this to go on anymore,” said Adam Quintero.
Supporters of same-sex marriage plan on Saturday to stage a national day of protest against Prop 8. Some demonstrators told KTVU that they are planning on more than protests. They say they plan to break away and carry out acts of civil disobedience.

Like the “man” says, it’s about hate all right.

You know, I have nothing against God Folk. Most of the ones I know are friendly, good natured, compassionate people.
But they are a frightened bunch, I’ll tell you that.
Chased out of town by a group of homosexual men armed with slogans and samba whistles?
Maybe you guys should pray for a set of balls.

Reverend – when your reading tutor comes over today, ask her to read to you the account included with the video.
Slogans and samba whistles are annoyances – theft, intimidation and assault are far worse. The Christians in Castro know what they’re dealing with and I expect it doesn’t surprise them what happened – but their response was pacifism and forgiveness. For that, I think they have far more courage than the thugs attacking them. I don’t have the patience to pray for thugs.
It is ironic that you giggle about praying for courage when liberals and gays have shown none. California has spoken, you lost. If getting married is so important to you, maybe you guys should pray for a set of boobs.

I think it was more than slogans and samba whistles. I don’t think anyone has pointed out that the militant homosexuals do not ascribe to ideas regarding natural law. If they are not willing to conform to natural law, how can one logically conclude that they will conform to civil law? Why is anyone shocked? I think these incidents are a profound illustration of why every culture has rejected homosexuality. I think a case can be made that homosexuals, if given the opportunity, will ultimately undermine the law and order of society.

Excellent point Torch – it’s telling that in cultures where homosexuality was widespread – ancient Greece, ancient Rome, Italy in the Middle Ages – never was same-sex marriage ever considered. Why? Because marriage, then as now, was considered a natural union in line with what nature intended. Homosexual sex was for pleasure, but served no part in upholding the foundation of civilization.

In the mid-1800’s Conservatives defended slavery and Liberals opposed it.
In the early 1900’s Conservatives defended male only voting rights and Liberals opposed it.
In the mid-1900’s Conservatives defended segregation and Liberals opposed it.
Now, in the early 2000’s Conservatives are defending discrimination against gays and Liberals are opposing it.
You WILL lose this battle as well. The only questions are how long will it take and what will be the cost.

What the homosexuals want is acceptance of their lifestyle. It isn’t the Christians that don’t like their actions, it’s GOD and as a Christian it is our responsibility to witness and share GOD’s word with all because GOD ALMIGHTY loves all of us so much HE doesn’t want anyone to be doomed to HELL.

I think of the glaring double standard. Just think how this would have been handled by the media and the police if it were gays who were treated this way. The police would have been much more aggressive against the mob, there would have been numerous hate crime prosecutions, and it would have been front page news spanning days, weeks, or months as the story progressed.
Don’t worry, it’s in God’s hands. It is the liberals who are harming the gays by pandering to their weakness.

Right, spare a moment for the cops in that situation. Their job is to prevent this encounter into a full on riot.
While I can’t comment on evidence I haven’t seen (alleged pants pull-downs, etc, it looks to me that the police should be commended for trying to deal in a respectful (to both sides) and effective way. The video shows this could have tipped over the edge – and the poice kept it from doing so.

Alencon,
Lets start with a very short history of the Liberal Party in this country…
*What history book did you read?
*It was the Democrats that defended slavery!
*It was the Democrats that defended segregation!
*It was Democrats that opposed and fought against civil rights!
*The KKK was the terrorist wing of the Democratic Party!
*The Liberal Democratic Party is the party of America segregation!
Now, let’s contrast that with the Republican Party
*The Republicans fought and won the Civil War to end slavery
*A Republican President put the first black man on the Supreme Court
*It was the Republicans who fought and passed the 1964 Civil Rights Act.
*Martin Luther King was a Republican
*Richard Nixon put pushed forward the first real effective measures in affirmative action laws (though I disagree)
*Ronald Reagan named the first female justice to the Supreme Court
*George H Bush named the second black man as Supreme Court justice
*George W Bush had the most diverse presidential cabinet in the history of the Presidency.
Would you like me to continue? Study your history my friend!

I have traveled to locations of the world where the government and the people oppose free speech, and free religion. Places that if you believe one thing means you can be thrown in jail, or killed while the government looks the other direction. But even in these countries such a shocking reaction against a peaceful demonstration of any sort would not happen. Regardless what the group represents, this is utter violence. The same violence that causes genocide and murder. Regardless if this event was planned or not. Regardless of how tired people are of some group. It never justifies assault and violence. If my neighbor dumped trash in my yard everyday I still don’t have the authority to rob his house and kill his dog, pre planned or not I would still be a criminal. I think we could all agree that no matter what your position is on homosexuality this was wrong. We can no longer look at problems in Africa and the Middle East and think we are beyond them, because we are cut from the same stone. Humans are without a doubt inherently evil, and we all just want to point the finger at our neighbor and blame, and kill him.

Linda,
What you call “God’s Word” is nothing of the sort. If God wanted us to know something, He would tell us Himself. So, don’t appoint yourself as God”s agent. The Bible was written by humans without any help from God–mostly priests in the 5th through 7th centuries BCE who were trying to secure their financial future.
That’s why the Bible is so filled with hate and cruelty.
