Rewarding Criminality: Liberal Pragmatism

Political Vindication’s very own Evrviglnt responded to a piece written by columnist Tom Plate of Asia Media (a sub-division of UCLA Asia Institute) about whether the America should negotiate with the Taliban to settle the hostage crisis in Afghanistan. This piece was just published at their website today.

Asia Media columnist Tom Plate concludes in his editorial:

The Bush administration should do the prisoner exchange, and get those well-meaning but naïve South Korean missionaries out of there before it is too late. The deal won’t encourage the bad guys, and it will save some good guys. Negotiating with them is the right thing to do, the humanitarian thing to do, and the pragmatic thing to do. Once again, the world is asking the United States to stop horsing around by getting off its high moral horse.

Political Vindication editor Evrviglnt responds:

A thoughtless editorial written by Tom Plate will be put on my blog as an example of how leftist ignorance cost lives. There’s a reason those Koreans were kidnapped — because the Italians traded five Taliban terrorists for release of a Italian journalist. One of those released to the Taliban said that he now insists all of his soldiers kidnap any foreigners they come across because Italy proved how profitable it can be!

Tom Plate’s proposition effectively turns kidnapping into an economic boon for the Taliban — an advantage they do not deserve for a price no naive volunteer should be forced to pay. To reward kidnapping not only puts all aid workers, UN and NATO volunteers at risk, but drives from war-torn areas the only means of security and food many refugees are desperately in need of.

Thoughtless pragmatism? Yes. If Mr. Plate wants to appear magnanimous, he should look for ways to be so without having others pay the price.
