What We’re Thankful For

Today we celebrate the uniquely American holiday of Thanksgiving. It’s too easy to grumble about things that haven’t gone our way; life can be unfair and there’s no justice sometimes in what rewards are doled out from on high. But to let life’s disappointments drive us to become curmudgeonly whiners only makes us the turd at the party – and this short life of ours is a party that ought to be celebrated. After all, we are Americans, and so have much to be thankful for.
I’d like to pick just one thing to highlight today that I’m thankful for: those Americans who stood up this year to challenge their government. At town halls and tea parties all over this country we watched average folks who were fed up with the top-down approach of our leaders and rose to oppose it. The sight of outraged citizens calling out uninformed politicians to their faces, the view of hundreds of thousands meeting in the nation’s capital on 9/12 – it’s a phenomenon that has shocked the political class and stunned into bitter frenzy many on the left that ought to appreciate the spectre of Americans standing up for what they believe in. This year we’ve seen people who ordinarily avoid the protests join them. We’ve watched people who ordinarily sit comfortable on the couch getting in cars and planes to register their dismay with a government that seemingly refuses to hear us. They hear us now.
So look up at Norman Rockwell’s painting above and see in it today’s proud American – ponder a moment all of those around you that have taken their citizenship duty to heart and thank them. Without such loyalty to the nation and what she stands for, this would not be the last and greatest free nation on earth.
