Liberal Intolerance #120: Attack On Religious Liberty Stimulated

Written by: Evrviglnt on Saturday, February 7th, 2009

Tucked away inside the “stimulus” bill is a serious attack on religious rights. It affects any learning institution that accepts “stimulus” funds.

Pages 164-165 of the stimulus contain the following prohibitions on the use of $3.5 billion available for renovation of public or private college and university facilities.

(2) PROHIBITED USES OF FUNDS.—No funds awarded under this section may be used for—
(C) modernization, renovation, or repair of facilities—
(i) used for sectarian instruction, religious worship, or a school or department of divinity; or
(ii) in which a substantial portion of the functions of the facilities are subsumed in a religious mission; or construction of new facilities.

Senator Jim Demint (R-South Carolina) introduced an amendment striking the language from the bill.  He puts up a great fight:

“This is a direct attack on students of faith, and I’m outraged Democrats are using an economic stimulus bill to promote discrimination,” said Senator DeMint. “Democrats should be ashamed of themselves for siding with the ACLU over millions of students of faith. These students simply want equal access to public facilities, which is their constitutional right. This hostility toward religion must end. Those who voted to for this discrimination are standing in the schoolhouse door to deny people of faith from entering any campus building renovated by this bill.

“This is now an ACLU stimulus designed to trigger lawsuits designed to intimidate religious organizations across the nation. This language is so vague, it’s not clear if students can even pray in a dorm room renovated with this funding since that is a form of ‘religious worship.’ If this provision remains in the bill, it will have a chilling effect on students of faith in America.

“It is in hard times that our society most needs faith. It provides the light that no darkness can overcome. This provision is an attempt to extinguish that light from college campuses, from the lives of our youth.

“In the words of President Obama today, ‘Faith can promote a greater good for all of us.’ Our varied beliefs can bring us together and rebuild what is broken. It lifts those who have fallen on hard times. Our culture cannot survive without faith and our nation cannot survive without freedom. This provision is an assault against both. It’s un-American and it’s unconstitutional. Intolerant and it’s intolerable.”

This funding restriction is unconstitutional. In the 2001 Good News Club v. Milford Central School Supreme Court decision, the court ruled that restricting religious speech within the context of public shared-use facilities (or schools) is unconstitutional.

His amendment failed.  What the hell is going on over there?  What reasonable person would insist on banning religious groups from meeting on college campuses?

Consider the power someone with ill intentions could do with this power. The ability to render campus buildings unusable by religious groups simply by ordering the simplest of renovations. Plumbing. Wiring. Carpets. Painting. Soon every building infected.

The president and his Democrats are insisting we rush this through – he wants it signed by president’s day (February 16). If this is any hint to other macabre legislation hitching a ride on this Trojan horse, there’s a full scale attack on our way of life.

Time to call or write every senator. Here’s a link to their contact information – spend a moment today and fire off an email, or even better – call in. We cannot afford to sit this battle out.

The tenth pillar of Communism states:

10. Free education for all children in public schools. Abolition of children’s factory labor in its present form. Combination of education with industrial production, etc.

Notice the emphasis on “public” in that pillar. This wording in the bill draws the line – either you conform to the “State’s” declaration of a public school or you will not only be responsible for all debts in a religiously affiliated school setting, you will eventually be taxed out of existence.

The Left is intent on every child or young adult in this country attending State-sponsored schools – there will be no deviation allowed from the common good.

I understand the underlying attack on our institutions that the left initiates, but I don’t understand the lack of resolve by Americans who ought to know better. When the “stimulus” passes it will result in less freedom in many more ways than economic…

Evrviglnt,

I think the vast majority of Americans just simply don’t realize the threat that looms over their personal freedoms and constitutional liberties. At the same time, Americans can be extremely tolerant..I think it comes with the whole melting pot idea. Look at me, I SEE the threats against my personal freedoms and here I sit typing on my blog and yours, watching hockey on the tube.

I think what the Left in America doesn’t quite comprehend is this: their plan to have America transition to the European model of socialism has one major bump in the road – and that is, although I just spoke of America’s tolerance, there always comes a point when the people dig their heels in and fight back, i.e. Boston Tea Party, Contract with America. While the Left sees Americans piling up all of their firearms in a public square like the Brits willingly did, they are not prepared for the round zinging past their heads on that day in America.

At least we have our hockey! Though as a Kings fan, hockey might just as well send me into the street frustrated as does Obama and his goons!
