Tempting the Bear – What I Want To Hear From Sarah Palin

Update below!

In the thick forests of Alaska they’ll tell you you’re never alone, though all one hears is the wind whispering through the evergreens and the ice crack under foot.  The hunter who spies his prey looks twice for what often cannot be seen – the scrounging cub.  An adult bear alone will scamper into the shadows of the forest, quickly lost as she wants nothing to do with you.  But a bear with her offspring is a beast that will turn on you, in her brown eyes a primordial rage blossoming.  Driven by instinct, to protect she attacks danger, baring her teeth and rising on her hind legs to tower over the threat.  Behind her you’ll see her cub scurry for safety with furtive glances back at her mother.  It’ss a plan drawn out in their DNA.  In that, we are not so different from the wild bear in the lengths we will go to protect our own.  I think we may see some of that fury tonight from the governor of Alaska.

She’s given them a head start – five days of uninterrupted attack, and just as the frenzy peaks, Governor Palin will turn to face them.   They’ve cornered her and her family, slashing at her children with a giddy spitefulness that has the decent stunned at the feverish rhetorical violence by the media pack.  When one thinks about her young daughter, a girl at an age where even the words of a stranger can cut to the heart, she finds herself oggled by deranged bloggers and ripped apart by a vorascious media, the anger builds.  A family vetted on the front pages of an old media flailing in its death throes.  They deign themselves the judges of who is worthy and who is to skinned and fed to the dogs. Who gave them that power?  Has there ever been such a public display of untamed arrogance frothing with rabid partisanship?  The pack moves in a predictable pattern, and the hunt for the political animal is one we all expect.  But they’ve raised their weapons at the children, at the babe who will never understand their dark hearts and at the pregnant girl who will find her mistakes become fodder for supermarket rags.

In my imagination’s eye I see mother Palin turn on her pursuers with a furious dignity one often only sees in the wild.  It’s not enough to be outraged, or disappointed with the savagery of the scribbling class.  She expects her character to be torn down, and she’ll endure the rumors, the lies, and the attacks  because this is the life she has chosen.  But nobody’s children deserve to be hunted down and devoured because of the choices of their parents.  Tonight that hunt must end.  I hope to see that primordial flicker in her eyes, and see her stand tall in brooding fury.  If she is to bring Alaska with her to this race, let it be the bear.

Sure, give us Hope.  Talk about Change.  But first, tear the dark hearts from those ignorant little smear merchants raising their pens to take aim.  It’s time for the hunted to turn on the hunter.  Tonight, give us revenge!

Michelle Malkin: Lady’s Night!

UPDATE: Sarah Palin took to that stage tonight like a athlete to the field – she looked relaxed, sounded focused and went after Obama hard.  I loved her grit – she snarled every time she mentioned Obama’s name.  She defended her experience as a mayor and a governor, chided the Democrats for their elitism, and even backhanded the media for their charges.  The way she introduced her family – that must have been like a knife being twisted into the gut of the rabid press – glowering from their boxes, hiding behind their cameras.  I wonder how many newsrooms were laughing tonight?  She’s no nonsense, ain’t afraid of nothing and ready to take on the next challenger.  I think the liberals just saw their worst nightmare – a woman both smart and warm, able to assume both the role of the executive and the mother.  No victim here – she is the American woman of the 21 century.  Why did we ever let the Democrats convince us that a female leader had to be cold and arrogant?

There is also one other thing – it was incredible to see and feel history turn tonight.  When I see the Republican party representing themselves as reflections of America rather than the aspirations of Americans, pride swells.  But Sarah Palin reminds me of a truism that we’ve always known – some of the toughest, smartest and indefatigable people in our lives are the women in our lives.  My mother fought hard to raise five kids on her own, defending herself from an abusive husband until she would not put her kids through it any more.  She educated herself, defied the naysayers and made a life from nearly nothing.  I see some of that strength in Governor Palin.

I’m feeling better about electing a whole woman rather than a half-black man.  Where’s is history really being made?  I’m proud to be a Republican!

After helping “celebrate” the DNC Convention last week, the MSNBC team of commentators covering the Republican convention reminds me more of a pack of hyenas picking apart the carcass of a zebra. This is not news coverage; this is propaganda in action.

Tonight’s crew of pundits was led by Keith Olbermann in New York, who, as a partisan commentator, needs no introduction. He was joined in St Paul by Chris Matthews (who melts at the sight of Barack Obama), Eugene Robinson, the Washington Post leftie, who is on Olbermann’s show almost every night, Rachel Maddow of Air America, Nora O’Donnell, who has made it crystal clear that she thinks Sarah Palin’s selection was a mistake, David Gregory, Andrea Mitchell, Chuck Todd, and, oh yes, Pat Buchanan, the token conservative (sometimes).

With the exception of Buchanan, the slant on the reporting of this convention is pretty unanimous: The Republicans suck. McCain sucks, and Sarah Palin has a pregnant 17-year-old daughter.

Some analysis!

Tonight, Chuck Todd pointed out that Palin had sold a private jet on E-bay, the implication being that this woman is out of touch with ordinary Americans, who can’t afford a private jet. Just one catch: The jet belonged to the state of Alaska and was sold to cut down on state expenses.

In addition, Olbermann immediately followed up on Mike Huckabee’s speech by jumping on two factual errors Huckabee made dealing with American history. Good job, Keith!

Matthews, for his part, struck out against those critics of the MSM coverage, pointing out that they (the media) were “doing their job” in pointing out the stories about Palin. (“We have a job to do.”) Yes, Chris, it was the media’s job to jump on the Daily Kos rumor about the Governor not being the real mother of the baby born in April. It was the media’s job to make a big deal out of the news that her daughter was going to have a baby out of wedlock.

Then Matthews informed us that Palin’s speech tonight (which supposedly attacks the “boys club” in politics) was being written by some guy he described as a member of the “boys club”. Chris, you are supposed to be an anchor. You could have let Robinson or Maddow mention that.

Robinson, who usually likes to write about racial victim hood issues, pointed out that the Republicans are “playing against the media”. Why shouldn’t they? Media bias is a fact, and it is nowhere better illustrated than at MSNBC.

Most importantly, the reaction to Palin’s speech:

Olbermann immediately commented that it was a great speech, but as to content….then went on to quote some Lincoln-era quote-implication: Her speech was devoid of content. He later went on to bemoan the “condescension” shown to Obama, Biden and the Democrats. This from the lead anchor of the convention coverage.

Matthews, the co-anchor, made a curious reference to Palin being a torpedo aimed at Barack and Michelle Obama on “cultural terms”. Curious indeed, but Matthews has been making curious comments with increasing regularity lately.

Eugene Robinson described it as “two speeches”. He liked the personal part but dismissed the other half as “canned-written by a McCain speechwriter”.

Rachel Maddow described Palin’s speech as “Sarcasm, mockery, insults, nasty sniping, and belittling” (toward Barack Obama). She should know.

White House press gadfly David Gregory described it a strong presentation that was well received (faint praise).

Buchanan: “Sensational”. That was about the only word he got out before they cut away to someone else, and Pat disappeared.

Then NBC News Anchor, Brian Williams came on and read a blog entry from “anonymous” author, Joe Klein, who blistered Palin for her policies in Alaska. (Klein is the stand-up guy who wrote the book, Primary Colors, by “anonymous”, denied being the author then admitted it. So much for his credibility.)

So MSNBC has a two-fold mission, as they see it: First, to defend themselves against criticism being directed toward the media for being biased and trying to tear down Sarah Palin; second, to tear down Sarah Palin.

None of the above is to deny news commentators the right to offer criticism of the convention, the Republicans, McCain or Palin. However, it would be nice to see some measure of balance among the commentators. In addition, how can MSNBC justify having two blatant partisans (Olbermann and Matthews) acting as anchors? Olbermann, for his part, detests Republicans, yet, here he is leading the coverage of the RNC Convention.

In my own view, Palin gave a fine speech. She has poise and charisma, and the convention has received her enthusiastically-contrary to what the press would have us believe. She has a tough road ahead, and, unfortunately, the attacks on her are just starting. Just wait till Keith and his pack of hyenas get back to “Countdown.”
