Sean Penn: Another Useful Idiot For Hugo Chavez
Sean Penn has been hanging out with Hugo Chavez, following a long train of Hollywood tools that have made the trip to sit at the feet of the red tyrant in Venezuela. It amazes me that Hollywood actors would pay homage to a man who has done more to stifle free expression than anything Joe McCarthy ever did – but we still endure long winded lectures about the looming and ever-present dangers of McCarthyism whenever we question the subversive crap the American movie industry puts out. They have made a caricature of freedom, that’s why we can’t recognize it in anything they put out.
The petulant little grease ball was a guest on David Letterman recently, and answering a question about the recent closure of RCTV by the dictator Chavez, Penn brushed off the threat to Venezuelan freedom by saying that the station was calling for the assassination of Hugo Chavez “every day.” I contacted the Venezuelan blogger behind “The Devil’s Excrement” to find out. I’ll call him Tomas to protect his identity, as he is a man who has lived there all his life, and speaks out against the real threats he lives with. Did RCTV propose assassinating Chavez?
“RCTV never said such a thing. The only person that talks about people trying to assassinate him is Chavez himself. The decision to close RCTV was made on the basis of an interpretation of the law by Chavez himself, despite the existence of independent bodies that are supposed to rule on such matters. On top of that the Supreme Court named by Chavez alone in 2002 but then expanded by 12 members to 30, as the original one was not allowing every one of his whims, confiscated RCTV’s equipment and gave it to the new Government TV station that replaced it.”
The television station was closed for the same reason Chavez closed every other media station that dared to stand independent – they were critical of him and his policies. This kind of attack against dissension should outrage every freedom loving liberal – indeed – every American, since it is our most powerful right – the right to protest our leaders. Sean Penn has surely exploited that American right, but he denies it to Venezuelans? Why? Tomas talks of how fear is now driving self censorship throughout the population, emasculating the media and so allowing corruption at the highest levels to run rampant. Venezuelans are at the mercy of a dictator because the mechanism for uncovering corruption and abuse has been strangled into silence.
My Venezuelan friend Tomas is a brave soul, for years fighting against the leviathan he sees smothering his country. But he now fears for his own safety. All the signs of terror are aligning – a paranoid leader, a call to war against unseen enemies, suppression of dissent in the name of civility and the rapacious lunge for unlimited power aided by the corrupt and the cowardly. It offers promises of a tragedy unfolding in Venezuela, replaying the horrors throughout human history when idealistic tyrants prostitute the pride of a people for power and treasure. Stripped of the dignity every human deserves, Venezuelans watch their government with a growing sense of doom. It is at times like this that America ought to be a shining example of the power of freedom. Instead Sean Penn arrives groveling at the feet of Hugo Chavez and doing his part to snuff out liberty.
Pray for Venezuela. Stand up for freedom and never forget how precious it is.
And curse the fools that condemn us all.
